Natalie Chapman, Managing Director, gemaker
Natalie is a STEM commercialisation and marketing expert, with more than 17 years’ experience turning innovative ideas and technologies into thriving businesses. She holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry from UNSW and an MBA in Marketing from the University of Wollongong (UOW).
As Leader of Business Development and Marketing at ANSTO, Natalie directed the strategic commercialisation of multiple innovations in mining, energy, environment, advanced materials, medicine and defence. As General Manager of Commercialisation at the Smart Services CRC, she helped to launch two successful spin-off businesses from research projects.
Natalie founded gemaker in 2011 and has since has turned her bold and creative idea – a commercialisation consultancy with a team working remotely and flexibly – into a successful reality. She’s proud that gemaker’s achievements were recognised with a 2017 NSW Telstra Business Award.
Rebecca Colless, Communication Specialist, gemaker
Rebecca Colless has a science degree, post-grad qualifications in communication, writing, and journalism, and 30 years of experience in communications and marketing.
She has co-owned two successful small businesses, and worked as a communications consultant since 2011, supporting research organisations, innovative businesses, government agencies and community groups. Her persuasive grant applications have helped clients win $28M to commercialise new tech and scale up innovative ventures.
Her sectors of experience include STEM, education, infrastructure, water services, sustainability, health, tourism and hospitality.
TRAINING PURPOSE
Excellent communication skills are critical for tech transfer professionals (TTPs) to succeed in taking new knowledge and technology to market. To win essential buy-in from industry partners, government stakeholders, investors and end users, you need to convey the distinct value of each innovation, adapting your pitch to engage audiences with varying constraints and priorities. This interactive session will equip you with a comprehensive kit of tools and techniques to help lift your marketing communications to the highest level.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the session, trainees will be able to:
• apply the principles and techniques of clear and persuasive communication
• avoid common communication blunders
• define the peak value proposition of an innovation
• plan effective pitches from elevator to extended length
• adapt their communication style to suit industry or investor audiences, and
• employ greater empathy, creativity and brevity to maximise audience engagement and impact.
